چکیده

In eye typing, a full on-screen keyboard often takes a lot of space because the inaccuracy in eye tracking requires big keys. We propose “scrollable keyboards” where one or more rows are hidden to save space. Results from an experiment with 8 expert participants show that the typing speed reduced by 51.4% for a 1-row keyboard and 25.3% for a 2-row keyboard compared to a full (3-row) QWERTY. By optimizing the keyboard layout according to letterto-letter probabilities we were able to reduce the scroll button usage, which further increased the typing speed from 7.26 wpm (QWERTY) to 8.86 wpm (optimized layout) on the 1-row keyboard, and from 11.17 wpm to 12.18 wpm on the 2-row keyboard, respectively.

A Prototype Gaze-Controlled Speller for Text Entry

Eye typing provides a means of communication that is useful for people with disabilities which prevent using their hands for text entry. In this paper, we describe the development of the prototype gaze-controlled speller and discuss its experimental evaluation. Using scrollable virtual keyboard interface, the text input speed of 1.2 wpm was achieved. Keywords—gaze tracking; gaze writing; eye ty...

Eype - Using Eye-Traces for Eye-Typing

Copyright is held by the author/owner(s). CHI’13 Workshop on Grand Challenges in Text Entry, April 28, 2013, Paris, France. Abstract Current eye-typing systems are suffering from the needed dwell timeout which limits the possible entry rate. In this position paper we discuss how the usage of eye-traces on on-screen keyboards could be used for almost dwell timeout free gaze based communication. ...

SliceType: Fast Gaze Typing with a Merging Keyboard

Jitter is an inevitable byproduct of gaze detection. Because of this, gaze typing tends to be a slow and frustrating process. In this paper, we propose SliceType, an on-screen keyboard that is optimized for gaze input. Our main objective is to use the screen area more efficiently. We achieve this by determining the keys that will not be used for the next input, and allocating their space to adj...

Text Entry in Immersive Head-Mounted Display-based Virtual Reality using Standard Keyboards

We study the performance and user experience of two popular mainstream text entry devices, desktop keyboards and touchscreen keyboards, for use in Virtual Reality (VR) applications. We discuss the limitations arising from limited visual feedback, and examine the efficiency of different strategies of use. We analyze a total of 24 hours of typing data in VR from 24 participants and find that novi...

Keyboards without Keyboards: A Survey of Virtual Keyboards

Input to small devices is becoming an increasingly crucial factor in development for the ever-more powerful embedded market. Speech input promises to become a feasible alternative to tiny keypads, yet its limited reliability, robustness, and flexibility render it unsuitable for certain tasks and/or environments. Various attempts have been made to provide the common keyboard metaphor without the...
